Understand the ASO building blocks

These answers focus on questions merchants commonly ask when deciding how products, configurations, presets and templates work together.

Quick mental model

Build by Options: customers build a design from the options you allow. Build from Presets: customers start from a design you already prepared. Templates: reusable ready-made designs that belong to a configuration and can be used as starting points.

Builder modes and templates

What is the difference between Build by Options, Build from Presets, and Templates?

Build by Options is for products where customers build their sign by choosing from the options you make available, such as size, shape, material, color, fixing method, text or images. You can restrict any of those options.

Build from Presets starts from designs prepared by the merchant. A preset can already contain positioned text, images and other elements. The customer chooses a design first, then edits only what you allow.

Templates are ready-made designs associated with a configuration. They can give customers a starting design and can also be surfaced through the Templates Gallery.

Remember

Build by Options = build it. Build from Presets = choose it, then personalize it. Templates = start from a saved example.

Should I use Build from Presets if I want to lock the sign shape?

No, not necessarily. If customers should still build the sign by selecting the options you provide, Build by Options can remain the right mode even when only one shape is available.

Making a single shape, size or material available does not turn the configuration into a preset-based configuration. Use Build from Presets when the customer’s starting point should be one or more designs you have already prepared.

Can I offer ready-made designs without using Build from Presets?

Yes. A Build by Options configuration can also have Templates. This is useful when you want customers to browse ready-made designs, purchase one as-is when allowed, or open one as a starting point in the customizer.

Products, configurations and templates

What is the difference between a Shopify product, a configuration, and a template?

A Shopify product is the product customers purchase in your store. A configuration defines the customizer experience, including the available sizes, materials, colors, pricing and other options, and is linked to one or more Shopify products. A template is a ready-made design that belongs to a configuration.

How do I turn a template into a Shopify product?

You do not convert a template into a product. Instead, link the configuration that contains the template to an existing Shopify product. The product provides the Shopify storefront and checkout context, while the configuration provides the customization experience.

If you want one separate Shopify product for each design, create those products in Shopify normally, link them to the appropriate configuration, and use the desired template as the starting design.

How do I display templates on my Shopify homepage?

Add the Templates Gallery block in the Shopify theme editor on the page where you want the designs to appear. Set Id of template’s configuration to the ID of the configuration containing those templates, then set Design Screen page url to the Shopify product page where the configurator block is installed.

Make sure that product is assigned to the same configuration in All Sign Customizer. Customers can then use the available template actions, such as opening a design in the customizer or adding it to cart when that action is enabled for the template.

Check the Design Screen page url setting first. The Templates Gallery is not itself a Shopify product page, so the Customize action needs a destination product page where the configurator is installed.

Also confirm that the destination product is assigned to the same configuration as the templates shown in the gallery.
