Neon Sign Price Calculator: How It Works

What a neon sign price calculator needs to know, what really costs you money, three ways to calculate the price, and a worked example.

A neon sign price calculator turns a customer’s text into a price in real time: they type “Open Late”, choose a font, a color and a size, and the price updates before they add to cart. Behind that simple experience is a pricing model that has to match what the sign really costs you to make. This guide explains what goes into that model, the main ways to calculate it, and the mistakes that make online neon prices wrong.

About the figures

All prices below are examples to illustrate the method, not market prices. Use your own costs and margins.

What the calculator needs to know

  • The text: number of lines, number of characters, upper and lower case.
  • The font: the same word is longer, wider or taller depending on the typeface.
  • The size: a standard size (Small, Medium, Large) or a width chosen by the customer.
  • The color: most single colors cost the same; mixed or color-changing LED flex may cost more.
  • The backboard: cut to shape, rectangle, or none, and its color.
  • Extras: jacket, mounting kit, dimmer or remote, waterproofing for outdoor signs, plug type.

What actually costs you money

  • LED neon flex, by the meter or foot. Its length depends on the strokes of every letter in the chosen font and size.
  • Backboard: acrylic area, cutting and drilling.
  • Power supply and electronics: an adapter, a controller, a dimmer.
  • Labor: cutting, bending or fitting the flex, soldering, testing.
  • Packaging and shipping, which grow with the sign’s size.

A good calculator approximates these costs from what the customer chose, then adds your margin.

Three ways to calculate the price

Per letter

Each character has a price, by size range: for example a rate per letter for Small signs and a higher rate for Large ones, plus a start price for the power supply and set-up. It is easy to explain and good enough for shops with a few block fonts. It undercharges long script words and overcharges narrow fonts.

By length of LED flex

The calculator measures the length of flex the text needs in the chosen font and size, and multiplies it by a rate. This follows your material cost closely: “Hello” in a flowing script costs more than “HELLO” in a condensed block font, as it does in the workshop. It requires a calculator that knows each font’s proportions.

Combined

A start price (power supply, set-up), plus a price per letter for labor, plus a cost per length of flex for material. It is the most accurate model, and still invisible to the customer, who just sees one price.

A worked example

A customer orders “Open Late” (8 letters) on two lines, Medium size, warm white, with a clear acrylic backboard cut to shape. With a combined model and example rates:

PartCalculationExample price
Start pricePower supply, set-up$45
Labor8 letters × $6$48
LED flexMeasured length 3.1 m × $22 per meter$68.20
BackboardCut to shape, clear$35
DimmerOption$15
Total$211.20

If the customer switches to a script font, the measured flex length grows and the price follows. If they choose Large, the size range changes the rates.

Mistakes that make online neon prices wrong

  • The same price for every font. Fonts differ a lot in stroke length. Measure each font, or price fonts by group.
  • Ignoring lowercase letters. Small letters in a large sign set the minimum height you can bend. Base sizes on the smallest letter, not just the capitals.
  • No minimum price. A two-letter sign still needs a power supply, a backboard and an hour of work.
  • Unlimited sizes. Set a maximum you can make and ship in one piece.
  • Extras hidden in the total. Show each option’s price where the customer chooses it.

Building the calculator into your Shopify store

You can put a neon price calculator on your Shopify product page without custom code. In All Sign Customizer, the app we make, each font is linked to a pricing profile with one of these methods (fixed cost per letter, letter material cost, or both combined) and size ranges, and the font’s minimum letter heights keep the calculated size accurate. Backboards, jackets, mountings and extra inputs each add an amount or a multiplier, and the price the customer sees is the one that goes to the Shopify cart.
